This tool is not required to complete the lesson. It’s for parents who want to track their student’s growth in the four habits of mind and two outcomes that Soundstalker Expeditions develops. Useful for portfolio documentation, ESA reporting, and end-of-year reviews.

This rubric evaluates your student’s growth in the four habits of mind and two outcomes that Soundstalker Expeditions is designed to develop. It is not a content test. It measures who your student is becoming as a thinker. Complete it after your student finishes all three paths of a lesson.

Not every path in every lesson will exercise all four habits equally. The Material Science Path may emphasize Intellectual Curiosity while the Transformational Impact Path exercises Critical Thinking Realism and Radical Empathy. After your student completes all three paths, look for evidence of growth across several of these traits — not all of them in every lesson, but a cumulative pattern of development over time.

The Four Habits

Intellectual Curiosity — beginning with questions, not answers

	Student asks questions beyond what the lesson requires. They notice odd details and pursue them. They ask “What’s really going on here?” rather than just completing the assignment.

Critical Thinking Realism — demanding evidence, not easy stories

	Student digs past the first explanation. They check sources, notice what’s missing as much as what’s present, and hold opinions lightly — ready to change their mind when better evidence appears.

Interdisciplinary Connection — refusing to think in boxes

	Student connects concepts across subjects — linking physics to history, materials to culture, past to present. They see how different domains interact rather than treating them as separate.

Radical Empathy — understanding the world on its own terms

	Student asks “If I had their constraints, would I have made the same choice?” They see tools, rituals, and traditions as rational solutions to real problems, not as curiosities or primitive mistakes.

The Two Outcomes

Intellectual Agency — from “What’s the answer?” to “What’s the right question?”

	Student drives their own investigations. They follow curiosity past the end of the assignment. They ask questions the lesson didn’t prompt and pursue answers on their own.

Productive Skepticism — questioning without becoming cynical

Concerns	Proficient	Advanced
	Student asks “Says who? Based on what? What else should I know?” They change their mind when better evidence appears without losing conviction or sliding into “everything is fake anyway.”
