The character exists for a specific reason: to give students a guide who makes the invisible architecture of human progress visible. Not a gimmick. A persona that embodies a real intellectual tradition and carries it into the classroom with the authority of the people who built it.
Soundstalker’s methodology is built on the work of eight scholars whose contributions span mathematics, neuroscience, anthropology, field documentation, systems analysis, and the practical mechanics of introducing new technology into existing cultures. They are the foundation. Here’s what each contributed:
Alexander J. Ellis — The forensic mathematician of sound, who brought quantitative rigor and the cent system to the physics of pitch and acoustics.
Judith Becker — The cognitive scientist who bridges neuroscience and ritual, revealing how technology impacts the human nervous system and consciousness.
John Blacking — The theorist who proved that the systems thinking we associate with specialized fields is actually a problem-solving capacity wired into every human mind — the reason this curriculum works for students who don’t think of themselves as experts.
Robert Garfias — The global field archivist whose deep respect for local traditions and patient documentation have preserved innovations across the world.
Mantle Hood — The methodologist who insisted that understanding any system requires entering it, not just observing it — the principle that makes Soundstalker Expeditions a hands-on journey, not a lecture.
Bruno Nettl — The rigorous anthropologist who asks the fundamental question: What social problem does this innovation solve?
Alan Lomax — The systems analyst who used data to reveal how cultural patterns reflect and shape large-scale social structures.
Robert (Bob) Brown — The visionary who understood how introducing a technology into a new system creates profound and predictable cultural change — and who helped build the commercial infrastructure that brought non-Western music to global audiences as a viable cultural and economic force.
When your student follows Soundstalker through an expedition, they’re following a lineage of thinkers who insisted that disciplines are not separate. The scholars whose work shaped this program spent their careers proving those connections. Soundstalker is the guide who translates their methods into a curriculum your student can actually use.
Conventional curriculum treats science, history, culture, and music as separate subjects taught in separate rooms by separate teachers. That’s a failure of imagination dressed up as curriculum — a system designed for administrative efficiency, not student learning. Once you compartmentalize knowledge, it’s easier to grade. Once it’s easier to grade, it’s easier to sort, classify, and process students through a system built to preserve the status quo. The structure serves the institution, not the student.
The problem is that siloed learning disconnects knowledge from meaning. Students learn facts without understanding why those facts matter or how they connect to anything real.

Soundstalker Expeditions exists for two reasons.
First, the creator of the program strongly believes students are capable of far more than is being asked of them. Over the past 80 years, we’ve systematically removed responsibility and accountability from students’ lives. We’ve allowed them to retreat behind technologies that reward isolation, where every choice reinforces the choice to stay isolated. We’ve lowered what we expect, and students have responded by disengaging from what we offer. This isn’t laziness or a generational defect. It’s a rational response to a system that asks too little and can’t accommodate intellectual curiosity.
Second, because real learning happens at the edge of what a student knows and what they don’t. At that edge, safety meets risk. If the student embraces intellectual risk, the mind expands. Settle for the known and comfortable, and they’ve chosen the path of mediocrity.
Why does a Philippine kulintang sound the way it does? The answer involves metallurgy, trade routes, forest ecology, acoustic physics, and cultural aesthetics. That’s not a music question. That’s an everything question. And it’s the kind of question that makes a student lean in instead of check out.
Every expedition starts with an object or a system — a real instrument, a real technology, a real human innovation. From that single entry point, students follow three paths: the Material Science Path (what is it made of and why), the Cultural Systems Path (what problem did it solve and for whom), and the Transformational Impact Path (how did it change the world after it arrived). By the end, they’ve engaged with physics, chemistry, geography, economics, history, and systems thinking — without ever being told they were studying “interdisciplinary” material. They were just following the question.
This is how real knowledge works. This is how real innovation happens. And this is what students need if they’re going to develop the intellectual agency to navigate a rapidly changing world where the hardest problems don’t come labeled with a single subject.
Module 1: The Distance Problem is the gateway. Once students have learned to follow a question across disciplines, the expeditions continue — each one built around a universal human problem that humans have solved in different ways across cultures and centuries.
Future expeditions may include The Time Problem, The Height Problem, The Hunger Problem, The Memory Problem, and others — each applying the same three-path methodology to a different set of artifacts, innovations, and human questions.
The capstone is The Solutions Problem — the expedition where students step back and examine the pattern itself: that every solution creates new problems, and that human brilliance consistently creates consequences human wisdom fails to anticipate. The first five expeditions become the keys. The curriculum turns the lens on itself.
The goal isn’t to cover every subject. The goal is to train the habit of thinking that connects them — and to raise a generation that might approach the next solution differently.
Soundstalker Expeditions was built by someone who spent decades at the intersection of materials science, cultural systems, and real-world problem-solving — as a field researcher, published scholar, and entrepreneur across trade, technology, and finance.
He has a BA in Education and an MA in Ethnomusicology, studying directly under Dr. Robert Garfias — one of the eight scholars whose work forms the foundation of this program. He was a founding member of the Mindanao Kulintang Ensemble and performed internationally with the group for nearly 40 years. He is published in a Special Edition of the Asian Music Journal.
But the credentials aren’t the point. The point is that he knows from experience that the switch flips on physics, chemistry, or engineering through unexpected doors. In his case, it was a question that wouldn’t let go: Why do Eastern and Western instruments sound so different? Not a passing curiosity — the kind of question that pulls you in and doesn’t stop until you’ve taken apart metallurgy, acoustics, trade history, and cultural cognition just to understand what you’re actually hearing. Deconstructing that answer flipped his physics switch. Not in a classroom. Not from a textbook. From following a question wherever it led.
